You might be asking yourself: What is a street team?
Before the days of social media, a street team was a dedicated group of fans that would plaster posters on every telephone pole they could find for a show. It was effective then and, while it can still be effective now, there are so many new methods. I have been a part of a variety of different teams with different methods. I want to make something that utilizes that old school feel of word of mouth, but bring it into this day and age.
The thing about astronautalis is that he has gotten so far simply because his fans are so dedicated to helping him. He works constantly – he is nearly always on tour – and he is always working on new music. He wants to keep us happy, and the best way possible to help repay him is to sell out his shows. When This Is Our Science came out, he was finding his name on different charts, closer and closer to number 1 than he’d expected, and this is all because of us. This is his career now: for the first time ever, this is how he pays his bills. Music, playing music and selling music, is his way of life.
What does this mean for you?
If you belong to any sort of social networking site, let people know about him. Post a video of your favorite song, or some lyrics if they’d be more into that. We have a project that is currently dedicated to dissecting the words he writes, fleshing out the history, and it is drawing in a whole new group of fans. Tell anyone and everyone to give him a listen, and figure out how to sell it best to them.
When he is back on a headlining tour, I plan on trying to start a postering campaign again. It didn’t work so well before, but I think it might turn out better this time around, because I have so many new people stepping up and helping me out. While he is out with Why?, make sure you get to the shows (and stick around for Why? because they really are a great band). Also make sure to take some people who have never been before. If they don’t care for rap, this is going to be the show to sell them. His set list leans more towards the music that Why? makes, meaning it’s the slower, more folk influenced music. Bring a crowd, and say hi to him (and the rest of the guys) at the merch stand.
I want every single show of his to sell out. I want his shows to start selling out in advance. His music has changed my life so much, and I want to repay him in the only way I know: increase the amount of fans coming to his shows and let him know how much his music means to us. There are more people out there, I know it.
So this is a call to arms! Trouble Hunters! Come together and help out our man, Andy Bothwell, so that his music can reach everyone! Grab your iPod, some headphones, and go play his music for everyone you know! With the help of you all, we can get his shows to sell out every time! And when you see Andy, let him know Team Astronautalis sent ya.
